Any suggestions on mileage intervals? I thought I read to drive at least 100 miles before repeating the cycle. Im seeing also some suggestions on a few thousand in between. Its going to be pretty dirty the first go around. Also, a suggestion on what type (brand) of dex/Merc to use the last time that will end up staying in there for the longer term.
I'm pretty sure he was referring to the pan retaining bolts. Steel bolts into aluminum have a bad tendency to seize. I've had to retap a few after they came out with the threads full of aluminum. I think I know a few of those ham fisted guys that always break things and then blame the quality of the part. I've had to fix some of their handywork myself.
Hope OP doesn't mind if I tag along here with a related question. I'm on the fence between doing a flush (like this) vs a few drain/fills with some driving in between on my '99 AW4 with 200k. It shifts well warm, but when cold does "jump" slightly into reverse and can be a bit late on the 2nd to 3rd shift. I haven't looked at the fluid yet and the service history is unknown.
Which leads me to my specific concern: What if the fluid in there is actually ATF+4 from a previous change? Say it happens to be. If I drain/fill 3-4 times with Dex/Merc til it stays red and drive something like 30miles in between each time, how much danger is there in driving those ~100miles with what would be an ATF+4 and Dex/Merc mix? Enough of a concern to warrant doing the flush instead?
