If you have a leaky gasket and have to pull the pan anyway it might make sense to replace the "filter"/screen since you are already in there and the gasket/filter usually come as a kit but otherwise a few drain and fills or "flushing" via the cooler lines will work fine.

^This, if you want a "real" filter you can plumb one into the cooler lines (if you use a spin-in adaptor it makes it real easy to service) but there is no "fine-particle" filter in the transmission, just a screen as others have said and there is no prescribed service interval for this "filter"/screen, the only time the FSM ever states replacing the "filter"/screen is as part of the diagnosis for problems (and if there are enough "chunks" in the fluid to plug up the screen you probably have major problems).

. I have a choice to install it or return it, what is recommended?
Its still a filter none the less. Do u go to the store and ask for a "pan gasket and screen?" No bumbasses. U ask for a pan gasket and filter"
Could it benefit from better filters, yes, but its still a filter. A screen is whats on your oil pickup in ur engine.

There's a lot of words people use that tend to not mean what they think it means. In this case, you. It is a screen and you're the dumba** for calling it a filter. Now if you're gonna believe a parts store guy who probably does not know the differences about xj and zj(yes I've heard a part guy ask a customer with a zj if it had a aw4) and think that cruiser54 doesn't know what he's talking about(15+ years working at a jeep? Cruiser knows lol) then you're the major fail here.
