Question ASD + Fuel pump clicking? Just replaced CKP sensor?

So because I do not have the power to bring the dead back to life this is a continuation of this thread. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/95-...7/#post3065069

Little recap. Was running late to get to work. Jumped in my jeep and hit the gas pretty hard. There was a back fire and it died. It would crank over but wouldn't start. And the fuel sending unit was working because you could smell the gas and hear it and what not.

So I replaced the cap and rotor (I had somewhat recently replaced the plugs and wires) and it kinda did a thing but didn't. So after a series of events I parked it in my garage and said screw it.

Well now I am moving from this apartment. And sharing a car with my fiance who has a completely different schedule to me has gotten pretty old quick. Plus winter is coming and I would really enjoy having my jeep again.

SO onto the recent developments. And i have spent a good amount of time on google and search bars in different forums trying to find answers. (Also I've only slept an hour and a half in 48 hours... So I could totally miss the ball park... I need to sum this up...)

Ok so replaced the crankshaft position sensor. And put the battery back in. When I put the key in the on position the auto shutdown relay is making a loud quick clicking and so is the fuel pump. Also my speedo is jumping around. Another important thing is after a while it will stop. And I can try to start the vehicle but once it doesnt start the clicking starts up again.

I swapped relays. I took the ASD relay out and it still had clicking from where it is supposed to be. Im at a total loss right now. And while I've read a bunch of different things on the subject... I need pictures so I know what im looking for I guess.

Thanks

Ok so I was messing around trying to get it to start. First thing the fuel and volt gauge work. Next something I think I mentioned when trying to start the jeep the speedo jumps around.

Now something that's new is the clicking noises from the relays will stop if I let the key stay in the on position without trying to crank it over. But once I crank her over and it doesn't start the clicking starts again?

Have you inspected the CPS harness wiring for chafing?

Also look at the wire loom at the end of the fuel injector wiring plastic manifold for chafing on the end of the fuel rail.

Wiggle the wire harnesses to see if makes a difference.

It sounds like a CPS wiring fault.

Edit: Are you getting a CHECK ENGINE light? Does the CEL bulb work? Have you checked for codes using a code reader?

You say that the issue occurs when the key is turned to Start but it doesn't occur in the RUN position.

Turn the key to RUN/ON (only) then jump the starter solenoid and see if the engine will start and run.

So I bought some new relays just for kicks and sprayed PB blaster on the grounds (possible dumb I know) and the clicking noises and stuff are gone.

However now the engine wants to start. Like it will kinda run... Not really though and it's extremely rough.

So I have no wires and a new cap. So could the camshaft position sensor have gone too? Will also be replacing the spark plugs for good measure.

Or the distributor? I have no idea how old it is. Could that be the issue?

Replaced the distributor. It has a new rotor and cap and new camshaft position sensor. The fuel pump relay is still clicking.

When the key is on the FP relay is still clicking. If I pull the relay the clicking stops. I have swapped around relays. Also if I let it sit for a period of time it stops clicking and you can hear the FP engage. Still not starting?

I guess fuses could possibly be bad? Or maybe still a ground? Any suggestions on which fuses to look at? I'll go over the grounds again.

Otherwise what else could be going or went bad? ECU?

Could having a bad fuel pump cause the relay to click? Which might cause my issues? I pulled the relay and it actually started to kick over. Like it was chugging like it'd start but like it was getting too much fuel. Which I would think makes sense. Correct? So what should I do here?

Redid all the grounds at the dip stick ground. Not sure which one was causing the problems but it's running again. And even if I didn't need some of the stuff I replaced it'd running like a top now.

the OP did answer,

he cleaned the 2 x ground studs on the side of the engine block, they several earth wires going to them. A known problem

I think they are 1/2" nuts, easily seen from below
