Default 95 Xj Ran, Drove, Backfired, and now won't start?

So this morning I got in my jeep and started it up without any issues. I didn't get very far. It made a loud backfire and then died. Because my gas gauge is broken I figured it ran out of gas. So I got my gas can and filled it up. Still no start.

So because I was super late for work I got a ride. Came back from work and still no start. I pump the gas pedel and it will try to start but won't. It turns over but no start.

So my question here is. Did I kill the engine finally? Has maybe 240xxx miles on it. OR am I lucky and its something I can fix?

Check for spark and if you do then check to see if your getting gas. Spray some carb cleaner if your system is injected.

Was the jeep out of gas? Maybe the tank is almost empty and the fuel pump sucked up some crud.

I'd start by checking the fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

I'll see if I can check for spark. And I'll also see if I can get some carb cleaner.

It has a polymer tank in it. So im not sure what kinda crud would be in it for it to get sucked up.

Don't know if it's possible on this engine, but symptoms sound exactly like what I've had on Pontiac V-8 and SBC, when timing chain gets so loose it jumps a tooth or two.

I replaced the distributor cap and rotor. And kinda got it started. It ran stupid rough and smoke started coming out of the valve cover...

I have a very bad feeling I killed it...
