I got myself into an XJ that needs a serious detail. What are the best products for cleaning the cloth interior? I'm dealing with smoke, kids, and pet odor. Your insights are invaluable.

I plan to remove all cloth from the XJ for this project (e.g., carpet, seats, headliner, and all the way down to the visors).

Take it to a car wash that does detailing and have them do it for like 50 bucks.

An open can of coffea along side an open can of charcoal(not match-lite) is the preffered method for myself and a few others after a day of fishing.leave it in over nite

Keep smoking, get rid of the kids, and don't let the pets in the car and you'll stop noticing it.

Why not just take out all the cloth stuff now if you're planning it anyway? Then you won't have to clean anything.

Febreze always worked for me, but I've never really had any odors except for fast food.

As far as the smoke, you can buy a anti-tobacco air freshener and it works pretty well. First, spray the crap out of the inside and leave everything closed. Maybe do this twice. Then, on a very windy day, leave the entire car open outside and let the wind flush it out.

I have most of the carpet out (bolts need some coaxing with PB Blaster) and I will attempt to clean it, or replace it if the herculiner does not dampen road noise adequately. The seats on the other hand, kinda have to stay. I'll be hunting in junk yards for replacements from any Jeep model that it fits (yes I've researched it). If I do all of that, the only funk would be coming from the headliner. I'll pull that along with the carpet, but have every intention of cleaning it and putting it back. I've got a friend iwth a steam cleaner and I'll try the other methods described in this thread to remove these odors if I cannot find a replacement headliner at a junk yard.

I'm just looking for methods of removing odors in the seats and headliner if I cannot find these in junk yards which are few and far between in my area.

I can't leave the seats out! I need to clean those and I don't think febreeze will be strong enough unfortunately. I'll be removing the seat covers from the pads and will do anything I can to clean the crap out of them. THanks for the help.

I've seen charcoal activated ordor removers in auto parts stores, but I think I need some comercial grade odor remover. I'll try to find a huge bag of charcoal and a case of Folgers. Maybe a bit extreme, but until I'm able to burry the body 76Anthony referred to, I'm kinda stuck.

I had no idea they sold that stuff (and that it would work)! Thanks for the help.

Right now, all I smell is the dog **** in the back area. The carpet will be set in a toxic chemical cleaning/stripping solution (very much like the joker lost his pretty face to in the original Batman with Keaton and Jack). If that doesn't work, it has no hope. I will lay down bedliner regardless. I should consider the cargo mats too. JcWhitney has a billion options. Course I'm not looking for beautiful rig here and the $200+ investment on a set of nice mats may be better spent elsewhere.
