Any estimates?
I am planning on putting a new 4.0 in my 91 XJ, however I simple don't know how to do it.
Anyone have a general estimate on how much it will be in labor to swap out the old 4.0 for the new one?

how about calling around and getting quotes from local shops? you then will answer you own question and the quotes will be exactly what is cost to replace.

Yeah, you have a point. Prob woulda been better to do that in the first place. While Im at it, if I had an Uncle who is pretty mechanically savy, is it all that hard to put in a new engine?

I swapped out the 4 banger in my 93 YJ a few years back. I got the long block from ATK (I would use them again if I ever need to) and I think the long block was a couple grand. Then I replaced a lot of the old components like water pump, t-stat, spark plugs, etc. There is no point in putting a bunch of old crap on a new motor. So figure in the cost of a basic tune and then some. It was the first motor swap I had done and it took me a week of working everynight after work. The most important thing is to take A LOT of pictures and label EVERYTHING. If you unplug something you label both ends. I labeled them alphabetically and then made a ledger in a notebook where I wrote down what it was and where it was in the engine bay. I also put all nuts, bolts and screws in zip lock bags and wrote on them what they are to. The only thing I messed up on was I didn't lift the wiring harness up when I put the new motor in so I had to cut a splice a bundle of wires.
