Thanks in advance for your sympathy for my being in California.
Now . . . Can any one tell me where I can find a Catalytic Converter for my 93 XJ here in California.
Every mail order company I called today (Partstrain, Discountconverters, summitracing, and several others) said that replacement Direct Fit converters were not available for my vehicle.
I'm not quite ready to move out of state yet, and I find it kind of difficult to imagine that a catalytic converter might be the breaking point for my relocation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

most of the ones you can get via mail order are not legal for sale in the state of California. you are probably going to have to get it and installed from a shop and they will inspect your old one to make sure it is bad. if it isn't bad they are not allowed to touch it legally. Colorado has a similar law about the removal of the cat by a service center but, if you were to swap it your self that is allowed. Your problem is going to be it has to be CARB compliant. or find someone out of state that you know have them order a non CARB cat. then when they receive it they can ship it to you.

I am not sure what state you live in,but in ca any shop that is certified can change out a cat that is bad.
I would also not give advise to purchase cats that are non compliant,if the tech doing the smog checks it and sees it is non compliant he/she will fail it for non compliant parts, then repairs will have to be made and the car refereed before it can be smogged.

so I'm in the same boat. got in a head on with my old heep over break, and the new one i bought has a straight pipe which won't pass smog for me to register it and get new plates.
they changed the law in CA as of the 1st so that you cannot put in a generic OBD-II CAT in, if you have a trashed cat or don't have one, you have to order one from the dealer... I was quoted $600 + labor. I have a '97 by the way
I think im going to the junk yard with a hacksaw...

Here in ca they remove them before they go to the yard and put them in a dumpster to be hauled off I guess to a class a dump, not to long ago someone at our local jy stold the dumpster,or should I say the cats in it,it was a big to do locally. do not go to the dealer, call your auto parts, like napa, they can get them, and muffler shops,it has gotten out of hand here but $600 is nuts.
ok. I guess I'll try to get one and just put it in myself. I was at a muffler shop and they told me that they could not put a generic one in, and that it had to be from a dealer.

It does have to be legal, not sure what they mean by generic, illegal maybe. The problem is everyone is being very careful about the smog laws here, you get caught doing anything illegal and they will take your license.
I know that as of yesterday cragens was selling direct fit cats for $180. They have always said in the past if they were compliant here, there was no mention that they were not.

Thanks for the quick feedback. My local Auto Zone quoted me $220. I'm assuming that there's no law that says I can't install the thing myself!
I was hoping to get a mail order for a few bucks cheeper.
As tempting as it sounds to have one shipped to an out-of-state friend, I think I'll keep it legal (for now).
