Default Anti-lock brake issues

So I had my xj for about a month and when I bought it the brakes vibrated and grinded when i pressed on them and the guy said it was the anti-lock brakes but he took it to a dealership and they said it wasn't anything to worry about & it had been like that for 3 years. When I went to get my brakes fixed the guy there also said it's nothing to worry about just to be careful in the rain. Well I've had it for about a month and it's always vibrated when I pressed on the brakes, but all of a sudden this morning it didn't vibrate when i put on the brakes and the ABS light came on. Should I worry about this?

Someething is not right. Your brakes should not be vibrating when applied, unless you're slamming the brakes on every time you stop. Sounds like the ABS module went south.

Go to the junkyard and get a brake booster and assembly (booster, master cylinder and proportioning valve) from a 89 xj and swap it out.

The ABS light on my 98 XJ has been on for a month. Sometimes it goes off for a while but usually it's on. Brakes work fine. Where do I start?

Put a small piece of tape on your gauge cluster over the ABS light. It's an instant fix and it will work for years.

On a serious note, my '98 doesn't have ABS, so I don't have a clue.

My 01 had ABS, never liked it. When I swapped out the old axles & installed my new axles they didn't have ABS. I just pulled the relays and all is good. If you don't mind not having ABS, pull the relays.
If you still have em the vibrations, I think it may be time for rotors & pads.

Thanks. I'll try slamming on the brakes to see if the ABS works. If not, out goes the relays.
