Both, it is definitely worth $15, and easily more.
The remotes themselves look like pretty much any other older automotive keyless remote both inside and out (the design resembles a late 90s Toyota/Isuzu remote), the included key-rings are a bit cheap but easy to replace.
The receiver module is a RF receiver chip, a few basic electronic components (capacitors, resistors, transistors, etc) and 4 relays (1 for lock, 1 for un-lock, 1 for trunk release, and 1 for flashing the lights). The build quality (soldering, etc.) is decent but not spectacular (like most made in china electronics) I've seen better, I've seen worse. All of this is in a somewhat bulky plastic casing. The main thing is that they didn't splurge on a dual-sided PCB or compact electronic components so the unit is probably bulkier than it needs to be (It could probably be 1/4 the size or smaller with a dual-sided PCB, surface-mount/miniaturized components, compact relays (or electronic circuits circuits capable of handling 15A rather than using relays with lower-amperage rated components to trigger them), etc.
I'm sure it doesn't have any of the fancy rolling-codes or other enhanced security features like most newer car keyless entry systems have, but neither did the OE XJ keyless entry system (with the 96 and older IR system being especially vulnerable), and it is not like it is hard to break into an XJ anyway

The plug itself looks similar but yours has more wires (my plug had a bunch of empty pins).
Here's a like to a wiring color chart for 97-98 (everything you need should be on the factory keyless plug):
http://www.commandocaralarms.com/wir...port/1153.html
I think the colors at least for power (may be red rather than pink though), ground, lock and un-lock are the same for a 97-98 as my 95, I think a 97+ will have a trigger for flashing the parking/turn-signal lights on the factory keyless harness (and possibly other things) which my 95 does not. It looks like I may have mixed up the lock and un-lock wires in my earlier post though.

Know the feeling, when I did mine I had difficulty finding a good diagram/table of the wires for my year (it seems to be easier to find this info for 97+s though) so I ended up just touching the hot (pink) wire to the others to find out what they did (not recommended, I blew the fuse twice).
In looking over the various diagrams/charts it looks like they used the same colors for lock/unlock for all the Chrysler years (91-01), if the diagrams/charts are correct.

Here's a link to a thread that might help:
https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/key...r-code-188254/
Here is the diagram in that thread, this is from the FSM (Factory Service Manual so it should be accurate but it is for a 99):

It looks like 12V+ is pink, - is black, dark-blue is unlock, and Light Blue with a Red stripe is lock.

Thanks Dmill, that clears up that a lot but what would plug into what? The diagram of the new key fob is vague and I dont want to trial and error all day? Also what does "cut off to pneumatic lock" mean on that diagram?

The wires from the box will be the same as noted in my previous post, the vehicle wires will change.
Red from the box will go to pink (+12V) from the vehicle harness.
Black from the box will go to black (-) on the vehicle.
Yellow and Yellow with a black stripe from the box will either go to Pink (+12V) or Black (-) on the vehicle depending on if the locks are negatively or positively switched. It was pink on my 95 but from what I read on the linked thread the 98 may be negatively switched with these going to black instead.
White from the box will go to Blue with a red stripe on the vehicle.
White with a black stripe will go to dark-blue on the vehicle.

pneumatic locks would be air-actuated rather than electrically-actuated, some older vehicles used these, the XJ has electrically actuated locks so you don't need to cut that wire.
