Default Thanks for solving the problem!

THANK-YOU SO MUCH! I just bought a 2001 jeep and took it to 2 different mechanics 4 times. They kept looking for vacuum leaks and replacing hoses with no luck. Any way my whistling noise is now gone thanks to you. And I did it my self by tightening that bolt near the firewall as you described below. Thank-you very very much.

Specs show 23ft lbs, so I cranked her to that and took it for a drive. No whistle. WHOOHOO! But I'm skeptical it was that easy to fix, I'll keep you all posted. Avallanche thanks for posting again, didn't mean to steal your thread... if you do get around to that picture I'd still like to see it. Maybe the next person who comes looking for an answer to this problem will be thanking us.

Talking No more annoying modem/teakettle/whistle noise!

Well I'm a believer now. Most of my bolts near the exhaust/intake manifold were loose. I replaced a vacuum tube and electric cooling fan with no luck. Been driving all day with no annoying noise. Tighten them bolts! I guess they can vibrate out of place after awhile or something.

the bolt you tightened...was it the one with the ground wire on it? it seems to be in a terrable location where i have to remove the gound bolt and then maybe tighten the one under it?

Default Actually..

The noise went away for maybe 5 days but came back. Finally got the actual problem fixed. In my case it was the intake manifold gasket. I could spray some carb cleaner in a certain spot and the noise would go away and the idle would drop down. I got it fixed at some place for around 300-400 bucks.

No - mine was on top in the back near the fire wall. No wires on it and not very hard to get to. It's the bolt attaching both the intake and exaust manifold. Really it's on top "or near the top of the engine" - in the back near the firewall. I put a wrench on it and just tightened it about a 1/3 of a turn. Stand on the drivers side of the engine and you can see it in the back of the engine "near the top".

Tighten the bolts. If problem persists and bolts are still tight, replace the intake manifold/exhaust header gasket. The gasket is one piece and is for both intake and exhaust.

I have been reading through this thread and I am not sure if I have the same issue or not. On my 01 XJ I get a whistling sound when I let off of the throttle. It does not always do it. But if it does do it, it pretty much whistles everytime I let off the throttle.
I would like to figure out what the heck it is and get it fixed. Its very annoying!

Just to note: It sounds like it is coming from the interior on the front passenger side

Chalk another one up to the loose bolt. Bought this thing over the weekend for a heck of a price because a slew of little problems (mostly neglected maintenance) forced him to get rid of it. A few days later and a few fixes like this and Im good.

...teapot going down the road describes it perfectly...very annoying, people looking...

...mechanic ran a smoke test for vacuum leak...only visible smoke came from around throttle body, just below throttle spring...

...removed throttle body, cleaned it, reinstalled with new gasket...

...still whistles, same as before...mechanic said something about an O ring on the butterfly shaft...is there a rebuild kit?...

...or must I try to salvage a throttle body from the parts yard?...
