Annoying whistle problem
Once it started whistling again (there's not much time to diagnose) I jumped out and checked the lines around the intake and on top... nothing. It is very distinct at the back of the engine against the firewall right at the intake gasket so i think my problem is coming from there. I just wish it would be something simpler lol!
The receipt says they replaced the "Valve Cover Vent Cap". I've been super busy lately and can't get a picture of the part that was replaced. I'll see what I can do about uploading it soon.
Well, I'm pretty sure I was able to pinpoint the whistle with my stethoscope it's coming from the gasket directly below the intake and before the exhaust manifold. There are a series of bolts that hold both manifolds in place and the very last one closest to the firewall was not as tight as it was suppose to be. Specs show 23ft lbs, so I cranked her to that and took it for a drive. No whistle. WHOOHOO! But I'm skeptical it was that easy to fix, I'll keep you all posted. Avallanche thanks for posting again, didn't mean to steal your thread... if you do get around to that picture I'd still like to see it. Maybe the next person who comes looking for an answer to this problem will be thanking us.

Mine starts happening about 2 miles from home after warming up, and continues for about 8 miles - usually. The pitch drops as I up the anti on my accelerator, then picks back up to a higher pitch as I let off the accelerator.
Did your fix solve the problem??
Did I tell you guys how much I LOVE this site? I created an account, searched for "engine whistle", perused the posts in that first thread and think I'm sure to find out the problem! Quick and easy!
thanks -
By the way, in case anyone decides to torque down some bolts on the intake, you might find this useful.

Can anyone attest to the comments made on this link's page about the warning against using non-OEM washers on the intake bolts?
"Be aware that many of these are dual purpose bolts that REQUIRE the special design OEM washers to retain both the intake AND exhaust manifolds! You cannot substitute hardware store washers! Your motor will have vacuum leaks and run like crap after a few heat / cool cycles loosen things up."

I hope your whistle problem has been remedied for good and I don't mind at all if others use this thread to diagnose the annoying whistles our Cherokees can produce lol.
About a month ago my cherokee developed a whistle that is driving me insane! There is no rhyme or reason as to when it starts. Sometimes it starts while its warming up and other times while I'm just cruising down the road. The noise is coming from the rear of the engine. So its definitely not a belt. I've tried spraying carb cleaner around the intake to see if it was a loose vaccuum line and that had no effect. It'll continue to whistle when on the throttle a tiny bit like when I'm cruising at 45mph in overdrive. Then when I give it more gas the whistle stops. I pulled the throttle body out and cleaned it real good and that didn't help at all. If I pull over and pop the hood to try and diagnose this problem it slowly fades away after a few minutes of idling. So it's a real pain to figure out! This whistle is quite loud from outside the vehicle. When the hood is popped it hurts my ears. Sometimes it only whistles for a short amount of time and sometimes it'll go for 15 or more minutes. If you're wondering it's a 2000 cherokee with the 4.0L and automatic transmission.
I uploaded a 20 second video on photobucket to give you an idea of what it sounds like. As you can see in the video it goes away when I'm on the throttle and it comes back when I'm not. Here's the link to the video.

If anyone can please help me figure this out I'd be extremely thankful!

I have been dealing with this "whistle" for over two years now and have spent more than $2000 trying to get it fixed on my 2000 Cherokee. I have been so fed up with it that I have been going to the Jeep dealership mechanics (which is pretty costly) to find a solution. I took my Jeep to over 5 mechanics and no one can tell me what it is...I even had one mechanic tell me to "just turn the radio on louder". I tighten the two bolts closest to the fire wall on the intake today and drove it. Whistle has stopped...for now. I hope that was my problem!!! I wanted to thank everyone who posted...finding this was amazing. THANK YOU!!!!
