so i finally figured out how to read a transfer case tag. looked under my 95 xj that has the 231 shifter bezel, and the tag says 242 AMC, year is 87. is this even a compatible transfer case for my year? its my buddies old xj and he's always had 4wd issues and i think i just found out why

If it truly is a 242, get the "shift gate" (the part under the bezel) and the bezel...

From what Ive read, its just an older style tag (242j/242amc same thing). Someone must of swapped it...
Do you feel an extra "detent" or "shift" between where it says 2h and 4h on the bezel?

 

honestly i feel like it just doesnt reach 2wd. i think ive had it in the full time 4hi.
