Default Am I being ripped off?

Took my Jeep in for an estimate last week to make it safe and reliable.. This is a quote I got.. Let me prefix this with saying they ONLY work on Jeeps and have 30+ years experience...

Front Brakes: $380
Front Shocks: $222
Rear Shocks: $268
Sway Bar bushings and end links: $180
Front Drive Shaft U joint: $100

Need to know if pricing excessive before I schedule... They admitted shock quote was high due to the amount of rust...

All over priced. Sway bar links are $29 for oem and you can install in 10 minutes with a ratchet.

That's high, even though I understand that shops have to make a profit.

4 shocks and labor to install should not be $600!! For brakes, you don't list exactly what they are replacing. Devil is in the details. If it is EVERYTHING, it might be in line.

You can always get a second estimate. Usually worthwhile unless you're sold on these guys.

Thats double what a set of very nice aftermarket shocks would cost, should cost nowhere near that much unless they plan on charging you $200 bucks just to put on shocks... Unless they're doing a complete front brake overhall (replacing everything) then thats entirely too much. I would get a second opinion.

In my opinion, individually the pricing sounds fair, a bit pricey for southern climates. Consider the cost of parts only, then add 10-15% markup to the shop plus an hourly labor charge of 75-90$ per hour. In short you are not getting ripped off. Just know all this work could be performed by you in a couple of weekends for less than half of the estimate.

Prices seem high, but as tjwalker said, "The devil is in the details".

Default What a rip-off!!

I just replaced all four shocks on my '01 in my driveway in less than 1.5 hours. And it cost me $93.00 after taxes for all four shocks(Monroe Gas-Matic LT). All you need is a ratchet, 13, 15 and 18mm sockets, 13 and 15mm wrenches, and some free time. Feel free to choose your favorite adult beverage to celebrate not blowing all that cash elsewhere!

Sp o a little over 1100 for parts and labor yea that's high. Shocks would have to be bilstein or better. Brakes yea I can see that normal but also new parts too(pads, rotors, drums, shoes, springs, wheel cylinders and flush) front u-joint matter axle or trans side, sway bar link you might as well get dicso for that price and some nice one too. The only problem I can see with the rust issue is how much rust? Front shocks easy, rear bad if they break the bolt on the body. Look up the prices yourself and see how much everything is and then add 15% then add about 3.5 hours maybe 4 at $90.

Yep, agree the devils in the details.....$380 for just new pads, don't think so....$380 for loaded calipers, new hoses and labor, might not be bad.

Wow I will never pay for someone to do work on my jeep unless it's a friend helping me replace the engine. $222 for the front shocks?? It's 3 bolts.. Might take someone 30 min to do. Id try to do some of it yourself if you can. Just what I think though.

If you have tools, time, and a place to work then go at most of it yourself. If not, check a couple other places to see if the pricing is in line and pay up... Hard to say if it is fair without seeing it itemized.

No your not. These are shops with alot of overhead. The charge by the hour. Most shops follow a standard flat rate time provide via ondemand, shopkey, or alldata. And parts are marked up about 30% over COST. So if your have the tools and knowledge to DIY then by all means do it.. If not then let the professionals do there jobs with about being labled as ripoffs. If techs are ripoffs then so are your plumbers, electricians, construction workers, ect

shops do overcharge on alot of things.. such as charging $200 to change the shocks on a vehicle, which is about an hours worth of work on the ground, and about 30 minutes on one of those fancy lifts. But the major reason shops are called ripoffs is that many will ream you for every penny they can get. A less knowledgable driver can sometimes walk in for an oil change and leave with a $1000 in "required maintenance" and other things that are "precautionary".

If those rear upper shock bolts break off in there due to rust, they will wish they never took in the job.

If there is rust everywhere, they are pricing accordingly.

Still, there are other shops. I would also want to see what brand of stuff they are proposing to use.

NOT Autozone I hope.
