ALTERNATOR.Is It Toast?
I just completed a head rebuild. On a 94 4.0 auto.
Replaced head,water pump,thermostat,idler pulley,serp belt & some wires.
Tightened belt to 1/2" deflection at longest point,12".
Squealed like a loud pig being grabbed, ready for slaughter.
Did search here. Pointed toward belt being too loose.
Tightened belt down to not twisting past 90*. My belt tightens at power steering pump.
Started back up. Squealed as bad again.
Alternator pulley is not spinning at all.
Alt did not seem to have any issues prior to head rebuild. No squeal at all.
Is next step to remove belt & check pulley for free spin?
And if it spins ok,what next?
If it does not spin ok,replace alt?
How can this go bad,by just sitting?

I found a 117 amp alt available at pep boys for $96 after core & online discount.
It's for a '99 4.0.
Any one know if it fits a 1994 including wires?

Pulled the belt off.
Alt pulley will not spin.
It's toast.
How could it have gone bad sitting in a garage for 2 months?

Good question, no info here. Fyi, you can buy the bearing and change it. Use to be common, (put brushes in it while you are at it)(or not). Now with shop rates so high and Chinese ect so cheap nobody does that much anymore. Myself, if I knew it was just the bearing I'd likely just change that...very common bearing available anywhere. Probably UTube has the "tricks" to doing it.
Btw I use a similar delco (I think), in my Micro Hydro power for my house. I've changed more of those than I can count....It runs 24/7 maybe 6 months of the year.

It was close to toast when it last ran, and sitting finished it off. Not unusual.
You can buy rebuild kits and do it yourself. It's not difficult at all.
ASP Wholesale is a good source.

Put a 21 or 22 mm with a ratchet and give it a turn. It is worn out but will work for a while until you get a new one. The bearings have seized. My old XJ would do it if it sat for a couple of weeks.

I'd be cautious there. Regulator is in the puter post 90. Then there were big changes about/during 96.. Probably smart to go with the 97?-99 model. The OBD I in the 94 just might be different than the OBD II post 96. Maybe worth researching if just changing a connector could save $50...

Thanks for the replys.
Just got it pulled.
I cranked on this hard with a pair of gloves.
No movement,
With the prices,I'm better off doing a upgrade.
The 117 amp for a '99 will not fit.
Checking on a '97, 136 amp @ pep boys for $103.
Part # 13746.
I'll let u know.
