Okay, I have a 99XJ with a Bad Alt. My alternator has the electrical plug that plugs in it and the main hot wire of course,. The older model alt's have the main hot and a couple nuts the hold the other wiring whatever they may be on there. What is the difference?

 

with your model year I believe that the alternator is the belt tensioner whereas with the 96 and newer cherokees the Power Steering pump is the tensioner. You may also have an alternator that is rated more than the 90amp POC alternator that mine has.

 

My belt tensioner is under the power steering pump on mine. The alt just bolts up with 2 bolts. Not sure on the amps that my alt puts out. I heard that if you have power everything you have a 100+ amp output but idk. I hope they have one in the morning.

 

yeah, makes sense that if you have power everything you'd have a bigger alternator.

 

Yep they changed the alt's on the 97+ up models like mine. Instead of 90 amp alts like the old ones the new ones are 117amps with different hookups.

Ima trade the one I got today back in for the right one for mine if we can find one. Then I will see if he wants to buy the other one I got cuz I dont need it,.

at that price I have a buddy who might. he got a rock in his sounds absolutely horrible but doesn't really affect the alternator much....yet
