Default Alternate Trans Mount...

1989 Jeep XJ 4.0 4x4 Auto 112,000 miles

Been dealing with an annoying exhaust knock for far too long at the crossmember. It's only gotten progressively worse. Changed transmount in Summer of 2019. Then it slowly came about.

Yes, I used a piece of garbage Anchor mount. So, going to change that again as I figure that is the culprit. Any brands that are good besides Mopar, so I might can save some money. Thank you for all the replies, as always.

Pretty sure they can't be worse than the Anchor trash I have now. Probably go with the Crown or OMIX both at $22 unless some others chime in with a resounding no.

The Crown and OMIX units are basically the same - I can't remember which one I got a few years ago but they're pretty much indistinguishable.

The M8 studs to the cross member are rather fragile. I've killed a number of them. FSM torque specs for the trans mount are vague, but the proper number is 18 ft-lbf, not the 30-something that is listed. The studs consistently shear off between 26 and 28 ft-lbf, let me tell you what. Snug tight + 1/8 or +1/4 turn is actually probably your best bet.

Oreillys has a powertorch trans mount ready and in stock. It's $33 so basically 3 times the cost as the Anchor one I used and $11 more expensive than the Crown or OMIX from Quadratech.

I know more expensive doesn't always mean better but 3 times the cost would lead me to believe it should be better quality.

The thing about all these trans mounts is they have 2 or 3 choices from each company.

Anchor has ones for $8, $12, $22.
Crown has ones for $12, $22.
PowerTech has them for $12, $33, etc.

But they all look identically the same. Usually parts will look a tiny bit different or you can just tell it's better quality. These all look thr same to each other, including the mopar one, no matter the price so you see one for $8 that looks identical to one for $33 and your mind screams "it's the same, how is it any different" haha.

I got a cheap set of mounts from Rock Auto.

My trans immediately sounded like a machine gun when driving

upon inspection, there is a difference, much less rubber...also, if you stand upon the low quality trans mount and bounce up & down, its like a tennis ball...Even the old stock one yields very little under this test

Thank you for letting me know that. I'm changing it tomorrow, plus some other things. I think I'm going to go with the one for $33. Surely one double to triple the price should be somewhat better.

And machine gun is a good description ahaha. The one I took off last year was almost certainly the orginal one from 1989 but never caused the exhaust to knock and it was noticable worn out and 30 years old.

Mopar is best, lots of folks like the Napa as a #2.

I have a Mopar on mine and it's been very nice for the last couple of years. I paid roughly $50 for it.

Hey, thanks for letting me know. I already have the junk one off. And will be putting the $33 one from Oreillys on tomorrow. Hopefully since it's 2 to 3 times the cost of the Anchor junk then it will be a bit better. If not and it goes out and the exhaust starts knocking in a month or two, I guess I'll eat the cost and order a Mopar.

I can't wait for shipping or I'd order one. I need my jeep back going as soon as possible. If I have this issue again, I'll order a week ahead before I have it apart. Wish me luck on the one I'm getting haha.
