Default Altenator question?

I got my "97 4.0 running today that i bought with a bad water pump.About a month ago i flushed the cooling system and let it sit after that. The altenator rusted and froze up!!!I got it to turn, but it's REAL loud now. What's a good price for a new alt.,and how long does it take to change one???I need to get this thing on the road and have some fun with it!

Far easier and less messy than replacing your water pump. Plan to spend ~ $130.00 for a new, decent replacement alternator. Bring your old one with you to compare them side by side and get the core exchange.

I paid $109 for a 90A stock replacement last weekend @ NAPA. Retail was $189.

What's the options like to upgrade capacity on the alternator? Any bigger ones that bolt right up?

Yes but, I don't recall the specific ones that will work. IIRC, an Alt. from a V8 Grand (130A) will work with a bit of elbow grease.

Mean Green's are expensive(around 400 bucks) but they will put out enough amps for whatever you can imagine.

I've posted donor lists for the 136A and 160A Nippondenso units that should work with 1991-up XJs.

I've had it confirmed (report from the field - my RENIX uses Delco...) that the 160A swap is no more difficult than the 136A swap, so that's a viable option.

Two things:
1) Do not get the Bosch 160A that was used in some vehicle on the donor lists - it won't fit. It was a concurrent option with the 160A ND - make sure you get the Nippondenso (usually identified by a mildly stylised "ND" cast into the rear case boss.)

2) Make sure to upgrade your wiring! I can help you with that, if you like. You'll need to do it to take full advantage of your uprated alternator... Hit me backchannel if you want to talk more about it.

I'm fairly sure I posted a copy here - but it could also be on JeepForum or CherokeeTalk (or even NAXJA. I've done it a few times.)

Filter by poster name - and punch mine in. I'm going to have to write up a "tech page" copy for my site one of these days...

The worst part about it is that I know I've done this a half-dozen times already - but I can't find it either!

Here we go...:
160A ND - 2005 WJ w/287ci V8 (standard)
136A ND - 1999-2004 WJ w/287ci V8 (standard)
136A ND - 1997-1998 ZJ w/318ci V8 (optional)
136A ND - 2002-2003 KJ w/148ci I4 (optional)
136A ND - 2002-2005 KD w/225ci V6 (standard)
160A ND - 2003-2005 KJ w/225ci V6 (optional)
136A ND - 2003-2005 TJ w/148ci I4 (optional)

That's the short list of Jeep donors. If I can stop having a boatload of running about to do, I'll work on a more comprehensive list for the WiP website sometime soon (it's on my list of stuff that I really want to do - but haven't had a chance to do yet...)

Awesome. Thanks for that. And yes, I would love to upgrade my wiring....I hate electrical, but it's something I really need to get over. I will remember that and hit you up with the PM when I get ready to collect some materials. Thanks!

I do what I can. I'm organising data for the Big Alternator Swap Chart right now (13NOV @ 0200 - I keep weird hours...)
