So I get off work this morning, stop by a store on the way home and my 2001 xj won't start. The first attempt yielded a couple of cranks, but even those died off. Now, it won't crank at all. I still have power, just won't start.

I've looked through to other threads for advice but ideas seem a little off from my situation. Should I go after the starter, check connections, the usual? Or could it be something else?

Yeah, I ditched it in the parking lot and hoofed it home. Thankfully, it was only about a mile.

If there is no click or anything, start by popping the shifter around, and trying to crank again, very well could be your NSS up to no good!

Thanks guys! I tried your suggestions, but to no avail. I ended up replacing the starter. I gave it a couple whacks w/ a hammer and it tried to crank. My buddy confirmed the starter diagnosis.

I'm back on the road now, waiting to see what breaks next...
