Do you really want to be in 4WD all the time? It'll use more gas than 2WD. This may not matter to you but something to think about.

NP242 is worth it.

NP249 I wouldn't pay scrap price for.

For a daily driver you can't beat an NP242, especially in areas with winter weather. I had one in my last XJ and I plan on swapping one into my current XJ when time allows.

While the 242 is technically a weaker TC than the 231. Theres nothing like that extra bit of traction in bad weather or when you want to embarass your porsche owning friend with your lifted JEEP on a twisty road.

FWI the 242 is just like your 231 except it has an added Fulltime gear selection. the 249 is 4wd HI or 4wd low, ONLY.

Not all ZJs came with the craptacular NP249 case. A lot had the 231 case and some had the 242 case. The 249 is junk, but it makes an excellent door stop or wheel chock.

I am very skeptical of this claim. The NP249 is way too large for a good door stop and the wrong shape for a wheel chock.

Let's just leave it at "anchor"
