being a mechanic and a lot of people questioning mechanics ethics, is there any way that you can provide a New Jersey guide for state inspections that would verify the air bag light on being a failure or is it a I say you fail but the other station may pass you type of thing... this sounds sketchy because I started searching other car forums and the majority say the light isn't a reason for failure but I can't find it either way in the NJ DMV site... Just curious about New Jersey inspections

Keep it simple, I had this problem for a long time too, drove myself looking for the cause. I ended up deciding that instead of tearing everything apart again to just go to a JY and for $10 get replacement controls for the AC/Heat. I swapped in the new panel and everything worked normally again. Seems like there was just a problem with the actual switches.

Jersey Inspections are a major PITA. I completely understand rules and guidelines, but some inspectors really just do go above and beyond to make your day miserable. Last year I took my g/f's Liberty to get inspected and she has the plastic "chrome" taillight guards that go on with double sided tape. Right before I went into the inspection I stopped at the stop sign, got out, pulled them off so I wouldn't get failed for "Obstruction of Taillights". The Liberty passed everything with flying colors, but inspector failed me anyway "because you're going to end up putting them back on once you leave here anyway." As far as I know, it is their responsibility to pass you as long as your vehicle is within all specs while it's in their inspection facility, but once you leave you can do whatever the heck you want at your own risk.

As for the airbag light issue, I'm not recommending you do this as a permanent fix, but can you pull the fuse and relays for the airbags just for the inspection? This way that light goes off and you'll roll through without any problems. Of course, this would be an issue if their computer picks up that you pulled the fuses for it. I would definitely recommend getting it fixed properly, but if you're down to the line to pass inspection, this may be worth it for you.

There was a recall by Diamler-Chtysler that relocates the airbag module from under the seat to under the center console. Call your local dealer with your VIN number and they'll get ya fixed up.

I just called this shop in New Jersey. They are an inspection station and they stated that an airbag light is not part of the inspection...

just checked another post of theirs and your right, I believe the op is from upstate ny which means he shouldn't have any problem getting it inspected... He should look into the recall thing that Frankz mentioned though. If you can get it fixed free that would be cool....

Hey guys, thanks for all the replys. I do live near Buffalo NY. I will just talk to my inspector. No sense in stressing out,if it may not be part of the actual inspection. There have been a few times when it intermintenely goes out for a short time, so I will check the seatbelt wires. I will also call the dealer to see if the recall was performed or not.
