Default To Shim or not to Shim ?

I am in the process of installing an 8.25 and a Hack/Tap SYE.
Will I have to shim the Rear end ? if so How much ?
If I take angle measurments with the D35, will it be the same
with the 8.25 ?
My Setup:
1997
4" lift front, 5" lift rear

A 3* shim should work fine.

3* might be OK. The way to figure it out is to make it look like this.

You want the drive line to be straight into the pinion.

This one has the same lift as you with a 4* shim

That looks like a D35
Do you think it would be the same shims for an 8.25 ?

Absolutely. It is the drive shaft harmonics that count, not the brand of differential.

Sound good:
I was just wondering if when bolted up, if both yokes pointed at the same angle

No, your going to use a double cardan driveshaft on the rear (similar to your front, or you can use a front in the rear) so the rear pinion will point directly at the TC (minus a degree or two). The hack and tap yoke will stay the same which is a different angle.
Have you looked into the PORC sye? They are only around $184. And they usually give you a few dollar off coupon in an e-mail that I used aginst the price of mine as well. Not much more than a hack and tap but I think worth it. Even the Advanced Adapter sye's arent too much.

Hi Mike:
Thanks, I have a front DS for the rear and also a 3103-27CV yoke on
the way.
I have to go the H&T route as I have the 242 TC.
Do you have a degree Shims on yours ?

yes, 3 degrees in mine. I went with steel shims. The first shims I ordered looked like they were made of pot-metal so I sent them back. I think they were made out of the same stuff as a hotwheels car!
I ended up getting steel shims locally that were wider than I needed so i had a machine shop cut the width to size.
Always a challenge!

I Could have went a little more... maybe a 4 degree shim but if the rear sags it should fall in line. Doing the SYE and the shim made a huge difference. My TC runs cooler, I can do 90mph on the highway and it's as smooth as can be.
I though it was smooth with just the SYE and front driveshaft. And I also thought there were no vibes until I went the whole way with the shims. It's soooo smooth now. I wish everyone could have ridden in mine as I took the steps. Big difference.
What I thought was tire vibration and so on were actually the pinion begging to be shimmed.
Forgot you had the 242. Your gonna love it shimmed! nice work!

Thanks Mike;
All I can find locally for steel Shims is *4 or *6 at RE, I live about 30 minutes from them
Everyone else only has aluminum shims either *2, *4 or *6
I wonder if *4 would be to much, I have 4" front and 5" rear lift.
I may raise the front another .5" to help level it out.

The best way is to measure, but I'll be ya' a Glock the 4 degree will be just what the Doctor ordered! If it was too much a local machine shop could mill it down to a 3 degree for you... They just have to put it on a sine plate and let her rip!
The guy in the hole-in-the-wall shop near me only charged me $10 to mill the width of both of the shims.

Your close!

Thanks again Mike;
I'll pick up a set of *4 steels and go from there.
I'm going to try to install the 8.25 rear tomorrow and hopefully
will receive my new Yoke by Monday and then its time to Hack & Tap the TC tail shaft, that has me alittle nervous
But I love Sparks and Metal Flying
