Air intakes...Worth it?
I had the old air box in my jeep when I bought it. I thought I could free up some power by putting on a cold air intake. I went the cheap route which has landed me in my current situation. I made my own cold air intake out of piping and a cone filter, over the past couple years the intake has become pretty beat up and is now jerry rigged under the hood.
I need a new air intake.
What I want to know is, are the aftermarket intakes really worth it? I am not really looking for miracle gas mileage just better flow.
Would the factory box and a hi-flow drop in filter from K&N do the same.
I have also thought about a snorkel system but that would be down the road.
What are your thoughts on "cold air intakes" are they worth it?
Thanks

I ran an after market in my first one(spent way tooo much money)and my second i have the stock box and hi flow filter. I dont notice a difference exept for the sound. the stock box is quieter. and when you wheel through mud the box helps the life of the filter. so no I dont think it is worth it!!!

Yea, stick with the stock box and high flow filter as SeattleCrwlr said. Open intakes filters get dirty real quick.

Like Buck said mine woke mine up also, its a lot more responsive and 1-2 more MPG's. I think its worth it but I guess its a personal choice. I also like the louder whistle it has when stepping on the gas, makes it kinda sound like a turbo diesel...

I have always went with a cheap cone filter, and a rusty's air tube. I don't think I would ever get a FIPK from K&N again. Too much money

I built my cold air intake for $40 bucks including the brand new Spectre wash and reuseable cone filter. I really wish K&N would lower their prices. Good stuff but, the mark up for a K&N sticker on it, pisses me off.

I like the idea of cold air intakes and at first I was just trying to go crazy with idea to open it up. Now I am liking the idea of keeping things simple. I think I might go back to the factory air box with a hi flow K&N filter. Later on down the road I might get a Safari snorkle for it. Unless I come across a killer deal I probably will just take my cold air off.

I never bought into the conical filters under the hood. With the right filter you may be pulling more air but it's warmer air than the stock airbox takes in. JMHO.
I run a Snorkle with a K&N in factory airbox.
