For what it is I don't really think it matters. I don't have one and it works better than the stock air box did and I still see power increases.

I don't have one. No big deal. It's not like adding the heat shield is gonna make you gain 50 HP.

With the filter that far back I would think that it would get more hot air than cold air.

maybe... but i didnt make it for cold air. i made it because all the oil from valve cover vent warped the other one where it wouldnt seal... and i could build heat shield and it would be fine for cold air. just havent

That's one reason to do it....

As far as a heat shield....I have the 2.5L and fabbed up my intake using a K&N system that fits a Ford Ranger....was given to me so why not make it work.

Anyway, i used the plastic chrome plated pieces, and mine looks about like the rest shown here. But my "heat shield" is more of a mud/debris shield. I offroad a bit, as well as compete in MudRuns (don't laugh, ran 4.55 seconds on 150ft track) but without the shield, i'd have sucked up half the track. So IMO, the shield is as much a necessity as the larger tube and filter for the air flow...IF you'll be playin in the soup!

what do you guys do with all the hoses connected to the airbox? Ive seen the breather on the valve cover but theres 1 hose up by the front (idk what its for), and 2 by the intake hose.

Not that easy. Most act as a heat sink for the engine. HAI anyone?
