There’s some kind of plastic cresent shaped cover in the way of the rear oil pan bolts. Giving me some issues here... I’ll see if I can pry it out. Fussed with the transmission inspection plate a bit but the exhaust down pipe isn’t leaving enough clearance for one of the larger bolts to come out.

Got it. 1/2” socket and push in real hard. Bolt head popped into place and two rear bolts are out. Oil pan is loose. Time to pull it out.

This is the exact same one i used, get the hb installer tool too. Just did this thursday morning as i had a wheeling trip yesterday. Withthe right tools it only took an hour to pull the old one and install the new one and thats even with a good ol Colorado safty break after getting the old one off. Its a bit tight but totally doable. No need to remove the radiator or the fan shroud granted my jeep is lifted but doesnt matter just means i dont have to jack it up ro get under it. I would suggest returning the puller you have and rent what you need from AutoZone

 

I secured the oil pan back on with 4 screws in the corners. There’s a big thunderstorm about 20 minuets away. The winds have picked up and I don’t need sand from my driveway blowing into the crank case. Moved on to the harmonic balancer for now.

 

Yes the hooked arms I guess grip on to the back of the balancer inner diameter. The pin goes into the hollowed out bolt and through the bolt hole on the crank. I don’t have the socket for this particular hex head so I’m going to have to pick up another socket, or try channel locks.

 

Okay got the balancer off no prob. The storm rolled in so I’m off to the shower.

 

Do the water pump pully and the fan clutch pully need to come out to do the timing cover gasket? Not sure if I have all the bolts located just yet. I got a few of the larger ones out... looks like there’s two small bolts one just behind the water pump and the other just behind the mechanical fan that I can’t seem to get to. I’m trying with a 10mm wrench but I’m thinking they’re smaller as well.

 

Okay I’ve decided not to do the tuning cover gasket. I don’t think it’s failed after cleaning it up. I’m having a bear of a time getting the front crank seal out though. Looks like it have a metal cap. Some kind of small round spring came out of it, but I can’t get the metal cap part out. Any suggestions?

Tool was a little long but it worked great once you find the right angle.

 

Seal pullers are great tools. I've rednecked it a few times by running a sheet metal screw into the seal and used a claw hammer though.

 

Will the new balancer press the new seal into place? These things seem equally difficult getting in.

 

Well I got as far as I’m going to get. Put everything back together and pou oil in it... reconnected the battery and went to start it... as soon as I opened the door piece of #%*] car alarm started going off. I didn’t even know this was equipped with an alarm. Pulled the power to the loud speaker cause it was loud! Now I can’t turn the engine over. How do I get rid of this alarm???

edit: I tried locking and unlocking the doors, starting the engine, nothing will get this alarm off.

 

No it won't. I think the last one I did I had a socket big enough and gently tapped it in. It can be a bugger to drive it straight.
