I used the old seal to tap the new one in. I think I got it seated well enough it’s not leaking yet.Originally Posted by lawsoncl
No it won't. I think the last one I did I had a socket big enough and gently tapped it in. It can be a bugger to drive it straight.
Okay to sum up the 4th of July Weepin Jeep Excursion...
Oil filter adapter orings have been replaced.
Pulled harmonic balancer, pulled old seal, replaced old seal, put on new balancer.
Pulled starter and cleaned, cleaned some more engine stuff.
Dropped oil pan, couldn’t get it out and admitted defeat until another weekend. I’ve had enough sand in my buttcrack.
Changed oil.
Realized Simple Green mixed with sand is an excellent, non toxic alternative to getting caked on grease off your body.
Realized my XJ is equipped with a car alarm. Was able to kill it by locating the overide ( which is supposed to be hidden. Go to brain box under driver dash, locate wires labeled “switch” follow and the hidden button will reveal itself...) button and hold it down for three second while the key in in the ignition and turned to ON. This will disable it completely. Or until you disconnect the battery again.
What I’ve learned:
Front oil seal = seal puller
Oil filter adapter = T60 bit, 12mm wrench, hot glue and cheater bar from top... although mine wasn’t on tight?
Expections maybe too high for only three available days never having done these things before.
Big leaks left = oil pan front gasket still dripping real good.
Small leak = rear main.... helps to find once everything is cleaned.

As for the oil pan... I raised via the unibody rails until both front tires were off the ground. With no luck I then lifted the front axle a few inches. This helped but still no luck. Next time I will need to remove the steering damper bolt. I think then it will come out.
I probably could have still replaced the gasket with the oil pan hanging. I’m thinking maybe tomorrow I’ll try and squeeze some RTV in the area cause it’s really coming out. Once everything was cleaned, put back together and started it was very clear where my big leak was. The front seal may not have even been leaking but regardless I know I’ve ruled it out.
I’ll have to find some more level ground too. My driveway is dirt and it was a little sketchy having the Jeep up that high on uneven ground.
