AC compressor doesn't come on.

AC compressor doesn't come on.
96 4x4 sport 4.0. I bought the xj about 8 months ago the a/c worked then but it was winter so I didn't use it. Now that its summer I tried it again and it only blows air. The compressor doesn't come on. And there isn't Freon/R-134 A ( I think thats what is) in it so I'm thinking its got a leak, but Will the compressor not kick on if there is no R-134 refrigerant ?

No compressor engagement is a safety feature to prevent the compressor from burning up due to low refrigerant/oil. Could be other reasons why it's not working....may need to have a pro look at it.
