have a 2000 4.0 ac clutch only engages half the time, its plenty charged and isnt overcharged, it just comes and goes, any ideas, should i just get a new compressor or what.

 

It's normal for the clutch to cycle on/off occasionally.....frequent cycling possibly indicates low refrigerant. U don't know if it's "plenty charged" unless u measured/added the exact amount of refrigerant by weight as indicated on the sticker under the hood.

 

its definitely not cycling it just shuts of for an hour or so and the comes back

 

might need to pull a washer out of the AC clutch, and clean the surfaces. Mine was doing the same thing, but now works perfect.

 

Remove the clutch, a clutch removal tool may become in handy
Wire brush both surfaces and remove one of the tiny shims.
