Default abs on ice

So we picked up a 99 xj and it's not kicking abs on when sliding on ice.
abs light goes out after starting, seems like it's working... Not in 4wd on ice though. No response
Can't let the wife drive it when it just locks.
If the relay was bad the light would stay on.. correct?

First post! I've learned a Ton about these xj's here- Got me outta trouble more than once already!

If all 4 wheels are locking up the ABS does not think anything is wrong. It thinks you are stopped. Its only when there is a difference between the different wheels.

Proper brake technique is far better than ABS. ABS is one of those things that was invented for people who don't want to be bothered with mastering the machine. (That's most people.)

Learn to feather the brakes and you'll disable ABS on every car you can.

Can't take the gravel everytime!

Drove the chevy truck this morning and abs was set off every stop, xj didn't set off at all?
feels like I'm to Light maybe? full tank w/spare right now...I wouldn't think so
Got good brakes otherwise, decent tires-wranglers
Seems it's not real touchy, only had this 99 a few months...I have to have abs where I live.

Is the abs light on?Or have you tried locking up the brakes on a clear dry road?

You would be better off learning to brake properly.

If you are hitting the ABS at every stop, in ANY vehicle, in ANY conditions, you are doing something very wrong.

Very wrong.

I'd never want abs. Weak axle, better offroad without abs, and a lot easier to work on the brake system without it.

The only time my abs fires is when I smash my brakes to test traction via listening for abs noises. That part is pretty convenient!

ABS has value in modern vehicles. Stability control systems are integrated with it and for the average driver, necessary to keep them out of trouble in bad conditions. I agree that traction control is worthless. However, I want other drivers to have ABS so that they can steer their vehicles when slamming on the brakes in winter conditions. May keep them out of mine or my family's lane and save a life.

Sure, those who are skilled in braking during slippery conditions may be able to out perform ABS and stability control. But that doesn't mean squat when sharing an icy road with the average driver.
