So my 89 Cherokee has the infamous recalled Bendix ABS set up. My ABS motor/pump started to scream at me like it was going to explode so i went and disconnected the ABS sensor stuff under the back seat and pulled the two ABS fuses (BATT ABS and ABS IGN) and that shut the pump up. thing is now, i dont have as much power as I did in my brakes, I have to put a bit more force on the pedal to stop. so now my next urgent project for this black beast is to convert my brakes. anyone know what I need to convert it to NON-ABS? is it better to swap it out to a Manual Brake System or to a Power Booster System? advice is GREATLY appriciated. thanks
(My purple Jeep has the Power Booster System so I'd have a good map out on that, my more main question is, how do I swap it to a Manual Brake System, If possible)

I have converted (2) XJ's from the Bendix ABS to non ABS brakes. The first was a 90 the second a 91, but they were pretty much the same and it was pretty much a simple bolt-on with just some minor mods. The brakes will work soooo much better than they did with the Bendix ABS system.
I used the double diaphram power booster and master cyl. from a 1996 non ABS XJ.
You will also need to:
1) Make a 1/4" thick spacer plate for between the booster and the firewall.
2) Re-position the proportioning valve and bend up some new lines from the master cyl. to the proportioning valve, and a new hard line from the Prop. valve to the left front .
3) Drill a new hole in the brake pedal lever for the push rod. Some people have the push rod changed rather than drilling but both methods work well.
I'ts a simple job that is well worth the effort IMO.

See that's what I was thinking, do I need to do the power booster set up? Is there a way to just use my existing master cylinder and eliminate the ABS components? Because then it would be like a Manual Brake set up. or would that be more difficult than just throwing in a power booster?Originally Posted by AMXJ

I have never tried to do it that way. The way I explained was really simple and really not that expensive. And like freegdr said "the brakes will be the best you can get with minimal cost".
I spent about $170.00 to convert my 91 from Bendix ABS to 96 XJ non ABS.
New master cyl. $57.81
Rebuilt power booster $72.80
Booster Core charge $20.00
Misc. brake hard lines $15.00
