Hello I have a stock (no mods) 99 XJ just turned over 200k. Really odd sound when I stop and hold the break then let go of the break it sounds like a clunk/pop from the mid to rear of the Jeep. Only happens when I let go of the break at a stop sign or light. It kinda jurks the Jeep too. Any ideas out there. Tranny mount, drive shaft, breaks, shocks? Shocks work fine but they are starting to get surface rust. Going to check the rear breaks later today but stops fine no sound when breaking. Im so confused. Thank you

I would look at the trans mount. But also look at the U-joins in the rear drive shaft. Mine makes a similar sound and I have determined it to be the axle wrapping from the springs being worn.

Thank you. Im pretty sure its the U-joins. They look shifted and warn out. Going to tackle this next weekend. Breaks checked out fine.Originally Posted by dans98xj
