Default '99 XJ doesnt want to start up

So here's the chronological order of events.

1) Alternator brush got caught, stopped working. As a result the Cherokee stalled out and died on me.

2) Towed it home. Charged the battery, moved it into the garage.

3) Replaced alternator. Charged battery.

4) Now the Cherokee winds up, will start if I pump the gas pedal but dies out immediately after I let off. It's a struggle to keep it going with me pushing the pedal.

5) Tried switching the ASD relay for the cooling fan one, no dice.

Any ideas?

Is the CEL on? Did you try clearing the computer?

Check engine light isn't on. I tried the

On-off On-off On

to reset the computer not sure if thats the proper way.

That doesn't reset the computer, it's for retreiving the error codes if any are present.

Remove terminals from battery. Bind together, turn on headlights. Leave for little while. Turn off headlights, reconnect terminals to battery.

The truck will probably run funky for a little while as the ECM is collecting data. But if it starts and runs fairly normally, it'll probably get even better with time.

Thanks bob, I'll try that. The battery sat out of it for two days while I was fixing the alternator. I'm guessing that would have the same affect.

No problem.

Failing that, the next choice would be the CPS. They go bad with no rhyme or reason. Worse case scenario is the ECU took a hit when the alternator went, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

I once couldn't start mine without pushing the pedal down, my engine cranked and my battery never died, it kept cranking and running everything but it was too weak to crank the engine and control the idle air control motor. Since your battery was dead and recharged I'd try just try a fresh battery (maybe from another car, I used our marine battery, and it started right up) before changing anything. I changed my CPS and IAC before just trying the battery, I kicked myself (my battery still read 11.8-11.9 Volts after I pulled it out, weirdest thing but it fixed my Jeep)
P.S- my Jeep wouldn't run at all, but cranked
