99 Standard Cherokee- harminc balancer/damper
Hello all. I have a question.
I had the starter go bad. I replaced the starter. Went to start the jeep and it started great then all of a sudden. boom ,crack, smoke.. i shut the engine off and thinking the belt broke when i grabbed the belt the harmonic balancer/damper came up with it. It actually separated from the pulley. My question is. What is the chance i got away without hurting the timing chain/belt or the Crank?? The jeep has 200k on it. Has anyone had this happen?

Used to work at a chrysler dealer, I have seen quite a few times where a balancer separates at the damper.. Get a new balacer with a GOOD bushing. This shouldn't have affected your timing unless there is exterior damage. And if you're that concerned about the timing, try turning the engine by hand.
