Default 99 Jeep Cherokee Jerking on highway

Hi Guys!

New member! Just bought a 99 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 4.0L 78000 miles on saturday. Im loving it! I hope to be on hear often...

I am having a issue with it. While driving on the highway and getting up to 70 mph, around 2150-2300 rpms it kind of jerks, and it will jerk until i rev it and let it settle back down then its fine.. then if it starts getting down near 2100 again its starts to jerk again.. It happens hear and there on normal road driving if i am getting on it a little bit, when it goes over 2300 it stars to jerk and then around 2400-2500 it will stop.. I have replaced the TPS sensor yesterday and the issue is still there.. Is there any ideas on this?

Thanks so much!
Mike

first 2 questions for you, is it an engine performance issue, like is it bogging down or anything of that sort that you can see on the rpm gauge (jumping around), or does it feel like it could be the transmission shifting funny and "jumping gears" (assuming you have an auto)

oh yeah welcome to CF!

Thanks so much for the quick reply. Yes it is an auto. I do see the RPMs flutter, but only for a second.. Its almost like you step on the brake for a second.. It makes a quick hard stop then goes then 1 sec later it stops then goes.. not more than a 25-50rpm drop. I wouldnt think it would be shifting gears because if im holding steady around 70mph and i slowly go down to 68 or 67 mph if the rpms hit around 2100 again then it starts the jerking..

can you get it to do it while in park, or just while driving? Not quite sure what to think on this one but i m hoping to sort it out enough so that maybe someone else will chime in with more info, and my thought on the trans was a cable adjustment at the tb area, if anyone has that diagram for the adjustment, please post it up lol, don't remember what it's called but it's and easy free adjustment to at least rule it out, and will probably help the shifting anyways.

EDIT: found the link to the directions on the adjustment, probably not the issue but it's easy and free anyways.

Hey Mike, any word on what fixed it? I just got back from a road trip and my 2001 Sport was doing hat I think to be the same thing. It jumps/jolts around but only after driving it for 50 or so miles. It started doing it really bad after about 150 miles. I'm thinking the alternator too as having the A/C on makes it much worse (though it does do it with the A/C off). Thanks!

The guy who dragged up a 6 month old thread didn't get an answer.

The guy who dragged up a 6 year old thread didn't get an answer.

Why would you expect to get an answer by dragging up a nine year old thread?

SUGGESTION: Start your own thread, use a good, descriptive title, describe what your problem is and what, if anything, you have already done to try to solve it, and you'll probably have several people jump in to help you. Zombie threads are rarely productive.
