...namely, the customer's description is incomplete; there is a filter problem (but NOT the new one); and the result is occlusion to forward flow...

IDK what "past due" means, but if the OP was using Big Orange and it was at 5001 miles, AFAIC the possibility of filter failure increases. And IMO the only way filter failure can be catastrophic is if the output port of the filter (or intake port/channel of the engine) becomes occluded, as in the reports of the disintegration of filter material in Fram filters. Although a new filter was put on, the underlying issue remains. This could occlude partial occlusion of the sensor (as previously noted, at zero pressure the rods would be knocking).Originally Posted by UpperDecker
A week ago my 99 Cherokee sport started acting weird by fluctuating oil pressure via gauge with acceleration and slowing down which it didn't normally do. Yesterday I did an oil change that was past due ...

Update: Changed out the above and the oil valve cover gasket and oil pressure issues have been resolved. Luckily no oil pump replacement for now. Originally Posted by PilafSama

Changing out the oil and oil filter today and the oil pressure sensor this weekend. I'll report back if that solves the fluctuations, if not I may take the advice above of changing out the oil pump.
