'99 Cherokee Cooling Fan won't stop...
I have a '99 Cherokee Classic, 4.0 liter engine, whose cooling fan won't stop. When you stop the engine and take the key out, the fan continues. It just started last night when my son stopped at his girl friends house and the cooling fan continued running. When it hit 20 minutes straight, I told him to head home. When he returned, I started the car several times and stopped it...the fan kept running.
I did a search of trouble-shooting tips and checked the relay in the power distribution box and replaced the cooling fan relay with another one of the same amps. The fan stopped when the relay was removed and started again when I installed another relay.
This morning, I bought a new relay to just make sure that the relay wasn't the problem. New relay installed and the fan keeps running.
Can anyone tell me what the next trouble-shooting step would be for a '99 Cherokee?
Thanks in advance.

messed up the first reply
The ignition switch supplies B+ and the PCM supplies B- to the primary side. Both are open with the switch off. unless you switched the wrong relay or there's multiple shorts, to B+ and B-....
strange.

Thanks for the picture...it's worth a thousand words. I actually replaced the fuse and not the relay...silly on my part. Let me do what I said I did and get back to you. Thanks for clarifying the relay.

Thanks lynskynbnd. The pic you posted clarified that I didn't actually check the relay, but checked the fuse for the cooling fan.
The problem was indeed the cooling fan relay. Sorry to spin everyone up. I'll be more careful in the future.
Thanks for all the great support.

Just wanted to chime in on this thread. I had the same problem with my beloved 97 Cherokee XJ 4.0. I searched the forums, found this thread, replaced the relay with a new unit from local parts store. Jeep now runs right, fan turns off when it should. Cost was 18 bucks, a 5 minute drive, and 2 minutes worth of wiggling the old relay out.
This was a nice no tools required fix. Pleased me not to have to yank off the bumper of cut an access hole like the guys with the Grand Cherokees.
Thanks guys.
