Default 98 XJ dies when you give it gas in reverse

I've got a friend that is having problems with an xj. When in reverse if you give it gas under a load like uphill it will die. If it is flat and the idle is enough to move it there is no problem. They are going to trace the wiring to see if anything is rubbing but is there any sensors or anything that would cause this to happen? I am told that they checked all the fuses and they are good. I did a search and didnt find a straight forward answer.

Thanks

What's a full filter, and why would it cause problems in reverse?

Maybe you have to empty it once in a while.
