I have the same 98 XJ as you do and had a related problem. I replaced the Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS) located on side of the throttle body and unscrewed the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, which is also located on the side of the throttle body, and cleaned it up carefully using IAC/Throttle cleaner, NOT carb cleaner. Both were easy jobs taking about one hour of my time.

I've had the same problem with my '96 for a long time. When it's first started, about 10 feet down the road it bogs a bit, then picks back up and is fine for the rest of the day. Never could figure out why. I've replaced pretty much every sensor on there as they wore out, none made a difference.

Yea that's exactly what mine is doing...it seems to.be a fuel issue..I guess ill start w a fuel filter and go from there..its just weird BC it wont do it after I'm about a block down the road?

Yeah, it's an oddball. It'll idle just fine in the driveway. Back out, shift to D, move about 10 feet and it bogs. Just for a moment, then it's fine. I quit worrying about it long ago other than as a curiosity as it's never gotten worse.

Mine does something similar if I'm on a certain incline at a certain speed. Does it only from my friends house up his hill under medium throttle or from the local Safeway up the hill under medium throttle. I was thinking there might be some gunk in the tank. I need a new fuel pump soon anyways so I thought the two might be connected

Yes I have the same problem...I have a late 97, 2.5 petrol it seems to be a problem on this model. 2 mechanics have looked at mine but cant figure it out

According to one of them if it was the fuel filter/pump it would hesitate most of the time not just on startup.

My 98 does this after a short stop heat soak, and it has the 703 injectors

and my 96 used to do it but worse when leaving a parking lot...felt like the fuel pump turned off then it would backfire a turn back on and be normal for the rest of the day. oh and it had LT1 injectors

it has nothing to do with fuel pump, crank sensor, or evap canister lol. I have the same issue and although it isn't a big deal for me, it still bugs the crap out of me that I don't know what it is!
