98 XJ airbag replacement
Hello all, I am working on project protection (my 98 XJ build)
I have 2 new airbags for the Jeep and I need to know how to replace them. I know to disconnect my battery during installation. I know my clock spring still works because cruise control light does operate when pressed. Do I have to do something to the crash module under the center console or can I just put the bags in? I don’t want them to explode when I reconnect the battery lol

If you're looking for an opinion, I'd say get a professional to do it. Those firing squibs are violent!

I agree with Dave. I did remove one from steering column years ago in a Cavalier that had a screw fall out and locked down the steering but I was young then and would tackle anything. Now I would play it safe on a airbag and let someone who what they are doing do it since it could go off on you or not go off when needed...If you insist all I did on the cavalier was unplug battery.

....and wait 30 minutes for the capacitor to drain down! The capacitor is there to fire the airbag in an accident where you loose battery power before the vehicle comes to rest, like clipping a guardrail, then hitting a tree!

If your airbags were deployed it is my understanding you have to get that module "reset" by mailing it into some place who can do that for you.
Or, you can buy a new one.
If you're airbags were NOT deployed, and you're just replacing bags for some reason, then you don't have to do anything to your module.
I replaced a module just like that in my pickup and pulled one out of a junkyard for $7. Works great.
In my opinion common sense goes a long ways. Cross your T's and dot your I's, keep the battery unhooked for a long time before and after you do your repairs. You could even pull airbag fuses. And don't sit in front of the steering wheel the first time you fire it up after your repairs (just encase lol).
