Default 98 XJ 2wd Trans issue

I'm not a happy camper right now. My daughters 98 transmission looks like it is starting to slip going into 1st. This was a used transmission that was put in maybe 2 1/2 years ago. I knew it was taking a chance when had it put in but I was hoping for more than 30 months from it. Not sure what I can do to try to put off another purchase right now. I'll check the fluid in the morning but I suspect I'm going to be PO'd. A used trans is about $300 around here and another $350 to put it in. I'm not knowledgeable enough and most likely not physically able to do the work myself. I'll have to check some small shops locally for a rebuild cost as well.

Any ideas of some things to check or anything else I can do would be appreciated.

Sorry, this looks to be more of a rant. :-(

First step is always check the fluid level. Second step: what model transmission, and what kind of fluid is in it?

(4.0L engine had AW4, 2.5L engine was paired with 32RH)

Low level and incorrect fluid - very common with AW4 - will cause slippage.

Just to clarify a bit. The aw4 need md3. Chrysler put out a service bulletin to use atf+4 years later, but it appears to just be an attempt to use a single fluid in their vehicles as it can cause damage to the trans.

Dex/merc.
Changing to ATF+4 in an AW4 that's lived most of it's life with Dexron has led to reports of slipping.

Sorry guys. I was a bit irked last evening when I typed this. It is a 4.0 with an AW4, 2wd. Off the top of my head I'm not positive what type fluid is in it. She works at an oil change facility so she may have changed the fluid and not let me know. I'll have her change it today to Dex/Merc. On a good note I found a used 4,0 (will be a rebuild project) and AW4 on a 98 XJ Limited. He's parting it out and I am picking up the trans and engine today for $300. I may find a few other odds and ends as well.
