98 Cherokee engine no start

Default 98 Cherokee engine no start

So I bought an 88 comanche a few months ago PO put in a 98 4.0 Ho been driving it for a while went to start it up one morning doesn't require a key turn the key and you can hear the pump cut on for 3 secs then try to start it and it cuts off no cranking or anything

I'd start with checking the battery terminals. Takes a very clean terminal to crank, not so much to run the fuel pump.

I've read a little on a post by another member with the same problems and it ended up being the engine ground wire ill check that as well

It may very well be the grounds. Make sure to check all of them not just the battery. Let us know what happens.

Figured out it was a hot wire that's connected to the battery cable is being held on by one straind of copper wire. Mashed the wires together so that they get contact and it fired right up!

Maybe it's time to replace that battery cabling?

Yeah planning on doing that and the ground strap after work assuming there won't be a tornado coming through haha

Yuck! That's a mess! Yeah, that just might be the problem!


You need to do a lot more than just mashing some wires together. That terminal needs to be jacked up and have a new one put under it!

There's quite a bit of corrosion there, and it's undoubtedly wicked up that red cable. You should replace the cables and the terminal.

Yeah I'm gonna have to the PO didn't know anything about this truck other than it said jeep comanche haha so the person before him must of put the 98 motor in and they're missing a lot of stuff a/c components, tranny cooler bottle pretty much everything on passenger side and I'm not getting any heat anybody got an idea of what I'm missing?
