Default '97 Engine into '93???

Hey guys I recently bought a '93 XJ 4.0 AW4 4x4 for $200. Its got a rod through the block and I'm planning on using a 4.0 from my buddy's 97 XJ. His is rusted beyond repair so don't ask why I didn't get that haha. But the question is what all do I have to swap from my old HO engine to the new one for it to work? I know mine is OBD-1 and his is OBD-2 so would I run into any sensor problems? Anything else I would need to do or would it be able to almost drop right in? I saved this jeep from going to pick-n-pull its got some life body wise

If the 93 only has a rod knock just replace the bottom end. The 7120 head is supposed to be a little better. Not to mention you wont have to worry about wiring issues. I have a 91 with an 88 bottom end. I had to relocate the coil but other than that its been fine. Just clean up the head and have the valve cover and manifold hot tanked. Its only like $40. And while your at it re-gasket the entire engine it will save you time and money in the long run.

The block has a hole in it and the head I'm sure was cracked by the PO overheating it. It seized up and a mixture of milkshake oil and coolant leaked all over. My only option at this point is to throw the 97 engine in.

From what I understand, just treat it as a long block swap.. Transfer all the old onto the new (unless you are going to get some new stuff).

I just did a 96 block to 94 swap recently. 96 is the same as 97.

I used the 94 intake, fuel rail and injectors, and power steering setup. The rest is the 96 block.
The fuel rail from the 96 won't work with the 93 because there is not a return line on the 96. The intake on the 96 has different mounts for the power steering pump. I don't know if you can swap the new steering pump setup on the old but I didn't so I did not have to deal with the fluid lines. But I think you can if people are swapping 99+ intakes onto older blocks.

The coolant temp sensor on my 94 is to small for the 96 block, I had to bend it to keep it in the hole because it kept getting bounced out of insert thing.

Good thing about the 93 is it's almost done with emissions (in my state). Obd1 only has 1 o2 sensor so it will run good with a very high flow exhaust. The 96 block runs just fine with all the 94 electronics.

While the motor is out you should do the valve cover gasket, exhaust manifold if it's cracked, and oil filter adapter o rings. Maybe a 99plus intake swap for more hp and torque (I wish I did but I'm not doing it with the motor in).

so pretty much use the Intake, throttle body, and fuel rail and I should be good?

The jeep itself, the hole in the block, and the motor mount that's torn to shreds.
