Default 97 a/c question

Got a strange problem that hopefully someone can shine some light on before I tear dash out looking. When my a/c is set on either dash or dash/floor vents, it will default to defrost when on accelerator. When I let off accelerator, it will switch back to dash and or floor vents. I am beating my head against wall and hope someone else has had this problem and can help with a fix. I don't mind pulling dash but I'd like to know what's going bad before i tear into it. Thanks in advance

I've got a '96 that does the very same thing. Since it is a RHD and I use it primarily for mail delivery, it really isn't much of a problem since when I'm accelerating I'm doing so very lightly from box to box. Out on the highway though...it's the same as yours. I've always thought it was either a vacuum or blend door issue (more likely vacuum). I never knew the Cherokee had that canister behind the bumper up front. I know I've owned lots of GM cars that had it though; looks like a black plastic football. They crack and/or the hoses come off quite easily.

Thanks MrTowers. Now I know I have something to check if I have any unexplained vacuum issues. I appreciate the link to the photos.
