Default 96xj with no obd2 reader

Hey guys so I have a 96xj with no obd2 port so I'm having a hell of a time getting it inspected, would any of you know if I could rewire one back in or if there is a connector where the obd2 port goes into? I also have a 01xj that I'm using for parts could I that as a reference?

No port under the dash would suggest it is a late 95 build which makes it OBD1, which requires an OBD1 reader, which most shops do not own. The OBD1 port is in the engine bay near the PCM.

From what i have found, some 96 were OB1 and some were OBD2, depending on the build date. The 96 model year was a mismash of 95 and 97. You will run into this again when replacing old parts.

If you have the jtec ecu you should have a obd2 port shoved up inside the kick panel. Maybe the dataport was abused at one time and broke off the mounting tabs.

Do you mind me asking what state you are in? You would think they are smart enough to know that not all cars have OBD 2. Does this mean it's obsolete and you can't drive it because it doesn't have OBD 2 and you can't get it inspected?

Whether it's coming from the shops or the state, something doesn't sound right with what they are imposing on an older vehicle here. What if it was a 55 Chevy?

Did you explain it's not even supposed to have OBD2? Sounds like they have no clue what they are doing man.

I had a 96 xj built very early in the run, and it was OBD2. OBD2 was mandated on all 96+ model year vehicles. I'm having a hard time believing Jeep shipped OBD1 96's

They shouldn't, even in California there are alternative inspection regulations and requirements for cars that were not produced from the factory with OBD2.

I would call the state or look up the actual requirements for that Jeep with no OBD2.
