Hi, my brother has a 96 XJ, 2wd auto. Tonight, we were coming from a family gathering and he made a stop to visit his friend here at the neighborhood. Once he stopped, the truck started sputtering and misfiring. He tried a few times, but the problem continued. Thanks that we live downhill, he just let it go, until he got home. I tried checking fuel, but has good pressure on the rail. He sprays starting fluid, and goes on right away, until it burns out.
Im taking out of the equation, fuel, cause I have pressure, and Ignition cause I have spark.

I'm thinking maybe injectors, or the signal that comes from the ECU.

Any other suggestions???

 

hey man... make sure the battery is strong and keeps a steady charge.... also, check the IAC (it is mounted on the throttle body - you can clean it with a throttle body cleaner, but may have to get a replacement) .... good luck!

Found it. After extensive cursing and beers under the heep, I recalled an old trick from an old mechanic. I check to see if there was juice getting to the fuel pump, good, so I smacked the gas tank with a rubber mallet. The fuel pump came to life!!!. After it turned on, for a few minutes, the heep started the hesitation again. Took out the FP assembly (easier that I thought) and replaced the FP and problem solved!!!
