I have a 1996 XJ Sport 4x4. It is a 4.0 HO with an automatic transmission. I have had it for about 2 years and ever since I can remember my XJ makes a clicking noise when I pull away from parking places as far as I know only in drive and possibly only in 2wd. The sound goes away once I get going maybe 25 or 30 mph or just after a few seconds. I listened to sound clips and watched videos of jeeps with cracked exhaust manifolds and bad lifters, which based on other descriptions I have read sounded like they might be my culprit. However, the sound mine makes did not sound particularly like either of these. It seems to be coming from underneath the driver's side, but I cannot pinpoint the location of the sound. Has anyone had this before? Does this sound like a problem that needs to be addressed or is this just one of those sounds jeeps make?

Is it kinds mellow? Mine makes a sound kinda like your talking about and I have put a new gasket on. I hear it when Im in like a drive thru or right next to a wall. I have to crawl undermine again and look.

yeah its pretty mellow. definitely not nearly as loud as a cracked exhaust manifold and seems to happen only occasionally. does not sound metallic and seems to go away once I either hit a certain speed or get warmed up.
