96 sport won't start. Help!
I'm looking at a 96 cherokee sport with 86,000 original miles. I'm buying it from the original owner who parked it two years ago. It's not been started since she parked it. Here's what I've done so far:
I drained gas tank and filled with 6 gallons and fuel cleaner.
I tuned it up with new distributor cap, wires and plugs.
It turns over strong but I don't seem to get ignition. With one plug exposed I can't see any fire.
I also don't know if its getting gas. This is a 4.0liter V6.
I know this is a broad question but what am I missing? I'm a limited grease monkey with basic skills. Any ideas about what to do next? Could the timing be off or timing chain broke? Is this beyond scope and should I just take it to a mechanic?

The first thing I would check is the CPS (crank position sensor). It is not an expensive part but can be a pain to install due to limited access to the mounting bolts. Even with basic mechanical knowledge you can do this yourself.
And welcome to CF from a fellow Tennessean.

Somehow your engine has become bent! That's the whole problem......
See, Jeep dropped the 2.8 liter V-6 in 87. Ever since then it has been a straight 6, 4.0 liter.
OK....I'm just yanking your chain, that's all.
Your probably going to be better off if you get a mechanic to take a look. Besides, you're not going to have to pay all that much for a car that doesn't run. You're probably going to come out way ahead on this one.

I'll check into the cps to see if it's something I want to try and do.
She selling it to me for $800. I think it's a steal. Certainly if I can get it to run with limited amount of extra trouble. Body and paint look great. It's really in great condition. I know what your thinking but she wasn't even trying to sell it. I just did some business at her house and came upon it. Her son gave her a new Jeep and she just parked it and never really thought about selling until I made her an offer. She's an older lady so I don't think she's lying when she said it was running when she parked it. Thanks for the advice.

$800 for a very low mile 96 is a great deal and I would jump on it without hesitation. Any questions you have about problems or repairs can certainly be answered here. What part of TN are you in?

yeah check the CKP. also check the coil if youre not getting spark. you can check to make sure youre getting fuel by poking the Schrader valve at the return side of the fuel rail.
