Does anyone know for sure if I can legally (in Utah) swap a '96 XJ 4.0/AW4 into a '97 XJ??

I do not know Utah law but a 96 and 97 are as far as I know the same, there should not be a problem.
here in ca they do not care if the engine is alike,if not you go to what they call a ref and they will inspect it and approve or disapprove it,if it has all the legal smog items and they function they will run a smog on it and if it passes they will put a ca bar sticker on it and from that point on it is legal.

Ok cool. I was wondering about CA too cause I'm moving back there in a few months. Thanks!
