Default '96 Drive shaft Univessal joints

Can some one confirm that the '96 XJ has a total of 5 driveshaft uni joints, 3 in the front shaft, and 2 in the rear ?

all the same type, and that is part num Spicer 5-153X or equivalant ?

I cant tell whether there is some difference in the pre/post '96 units ?

Your information is correct.

Here are the ones I used (I like grease fittings):

Also, if you are going through the trouble of refreshing the front drive shaft, you might want to include the socket yoke assembly for the cardan joint on the front shaft:

Here is the difference you were asking about:
1994 to 2001 had a non-greaseable centering yoke.
1986 to 1993 had a greaseable yoke.

The advantage of the 5-1310-1X is the zerk is in the cap,
not in the cross as in the 5-153X. Plus it is stronger.

The 5-1310-X is also stronger, if you want non-greaseable.

Thanks Gents,

I am chasing a vibration that occurs only between 55 to 60mph..it goes away above 60

it came with the truck, and I have replaced quite a few parts with no change in the vibration

my next proposed step was to remove the front shaft, and see if it disappears ?

Am I right in assuming I cannot remove the rear shaft and drive at speed in my NP242 ?

in that case, I will just replace the rear unis

thought the vibe was just in steering, but I think its shaking the whole driveline

parts replaced or swapped include, wheels & tyres twice, 2" lift, LCA with poly bush, complete sway bar rebush, swapped draglink & tie rods & ends, new adjustable trackbar, trans mount, harmonic balancer, shocks

not yet done, but checked seemingly ok, engine mounts, wheel bearings, ball joints, axle unis

You can drive with the np242 with either the front or rear driveshaft removed. You just have to be in part time 4x4 if you have the rear shaft out.

Don't discount the possibility of a tire being bad.. it should be easy to check by swapping the tires around front to back to see if it affects the vibe. I had a bad tire and it gave an awful vibe starting at around 45mph and after chasing it for months swapped the tire out and lo and behold, it was gone - I couldn't believe I'd overlooked such a simple possibility.

I have 3 spare sets of wheels & tyres. As I mentioned , I have swapped them once before the lift, and once after, no change, so that is pretty conclusive.

Also re-aligned wheels a couple of times, no change
