96 conversion of fuel system to later model
My 96 XJ 4.0L has high fuel pressure (85psi at idle). I assume the pressure regulator is bad. The engine is bogging down while driving. It idols fine but will fall on its face when trying to accelerate (after a lengthy warm up period). When you release the accelerator pedal the engine goes back to idle no problem. I assume the high pressure is too high for the injectors.
This particular vehicle is the model with the fuel pump, regulator, and sending unit in the tank (1996 only). The regulator is not on top of the tank or on the fuel rail. The complete in tank unit is impossible to find. It is NLA at the dealership.
Any suggestions? Has anyone converted to earlier or later model setup by changing the fuel rail, etc.?

That's a tough one to find. It was only used on some of the '96 XJs and does run slightly higher rail pressure.
The pump/regulator you need is Chrysler part number 4798941
There is only one aftermarket manufacturer left- Omix-ada. Part number OAIS-4798941
It's gonna run about $170 for the complete assembly.
I googled the OMIX number and came up with just two hits:
http://www.jeeptopdepot.com/productd...x?partID=62583
and
http://www.4wd.com/Jeep-Engine-Perfo...n=OAIS-4798941

I had a problem on my 97. I found out that it had bad fuel pressure regulator inside fuel tank. I paid about $80 for that regulator from a dealer.
People usually replace whole unit, spending a lot of money.
My problem was leaking regulator.
Good luck.
I just checked, it is $34 on Ebay for 96

The ebay listing is Standard Motor Products part PR210. That isn't the correct one for the '96 with the regulator on top of the pump. Seems most parts houses think the rail mount regulator will work in this application. It won't.

Thanks for the response and help. I was hoping that Omix-Ada was still producing the pump unit but i could not locate the part number anywhere. I was about to give up.
I will order the unit from one of the three vendors you gave me. Hopefully that will resolve the issues that I am having.
Thanks again. Maybe I can get this jeep back on the road and trails soon.

I telephoned 4wd.com today (www.4wd.com and www.jeeptopdepot.com are owned by the same group).
They do not have the Omix-Ada 4798941 in stock and state that it is NLA from Omix. They show it on their website but do not have the part.
I am not sure where to get the pump assembly. Any other suggestions?
Has anyone out there modified a 96 with an external fuel pressure regulator? Can you get a return line to the tank?

fixed?
Im having the same issue in my 96, cant find the fuel regulator anywhere nor the fuel pump module. Thinking about putting a universal fuel pressure regulator with a bypass in the fuel line and routing the bypass back to the tank. Any ideas?

I was able to replace my regulator with a used one that worked. If I could not find one I was going to use an after market adjustable regulator. As you have noted that would require a bypass back to the tank. I was going to try a 1993 fuel pump setup that has a bypass inlet. The only problem may be the wiring.
