96 cherokee overheats under load
From this point in the thread, I am going to post what changes I make, and the outcome, to hopefully help someone else with similar problems.
First, Will be getting a pro flush , new t stat and coolant monday.

Took my jeep to get the coolant system flushed at a local radiator shop. Guy called me later and informed me that my radiator is shot.
First I felt like an *** for not knowing that myself, and then I am wondering why its shot, since I thought I had it replaced 50,000 miles ago.
( I gotta look into that.)
So, I got a CSF 3 row radiator and installed. Also a Stant 195 degree stat. New hoses, belt, and also cranked the clutch spring counterclockwise one turn. Pulled the a/c condenser coil out for more air flow too. The heat gauge is straight up with no electric fan assist. Going to hook up a trailer and see what it does on some long hills.

Oh wow this thread makes me feel alittle better. Yeah mine runs hot in summer too. Idling too long and back up/pull forward when backing in a trailer really makes mine hot. It'd climb over 210 and get to almost where the red on the temp thing is and then my fan kicks on, when this happens I usually pull out and go fast to get some air flowing in there or shut it off for a while. I got a new radiator a year ago.
my 96 started to creep hot this summer and i changed my fan clutch. it was $50 at autozone and took me about 1/2hr. im a chick with smaller hands though....so it was a bit easier to squeeze passed the radiator. with your new fatter radiator it'll be tight. if you change out your fan clutch take your new rad out...prob way easier for you.

Yes well you need to be convinced. Think about it. The fan is driven by your pulley system. It takes a lot to turn that fan. Therefore decreasing power, mileage etc. Now electric fans take next to no power to run and only come on at CERTAIN moments. The fan on the motor is constantly spinning. The elvtric fans put no stress on your vehicle what so ever where as a clutch fan has many downfalls. Proven fact.
IF the fan clutch is working correctly (and I'll admit that many may not be by now) then you're not going to gain much efficiency (if anything) by installing an electric fan. You may gain finer control, but against that you're also going to lose energy in the alternator because they generally run at 50-62% efficiency* at part load.
*Wikipedia figures. Used at my own risk

I see both sides of this: the engine turning the clutch fan all the time vs alternator running the electric fan, ( ? ) of the time. Anyone actually done the mod and have numbers to compare. HP, MPG before and after.
Another thing, in my situation, I want to use new parts, so my choices are narrowed a little bit. But I want the same or more CFM as I should have now. What CFM does a stock fan produce? I read where the aux produced 1500 CFM, sound right?

If you have an auto trans and your towing in o.d it will overheat no matter what you do (unless you use a tranny cooler bigger than your rad. being a wise azz ).But really towing anything in o.d will cause your xj to overheat big time.http://www.ffdynamics.com/index.htm check these guy's for a great fan ( bolt up no afro engineering).Check this site out toohttp://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/index.html. this is helpful to http://www.lunghd.com/index.html just search under cooling here, plus lots more goodies.
